When Casey and Grant first emailed me about shooting their wedding, we had some back and forth about the date and location. They told me they were going to announce their engagement to their parents in a few days, and simultaneously ask if they could use the backyard of Grant’s parent’s home in Litchfield, Connecticut (just down the road from where I grew up actually). I was excited when I heard back that they had gotten a “yes.”
I was also super excited because Casey asked if I could do something a bit unique for them: instead of an engagement session, she wanted to surprise her mom with a mother daughter Connecticut family photo session at the house where she and Grant would be getting married. I of course said yes, and got right to brainstorming how I would shoot this session. I don’t do too many family sessions with two adults, so it was an awesome opportunity to stretch my creativity and approach. I asked them to bring some special possessions that reminded them of one another. Pam brought these hilarious cutouts of herself in college, and Casey as a hardcore little toddler (seriously, scroll down and take a look). Casey brought her father’s miniature U.S. Constitution. Once I met them both and we started shooting, I got a feel for their relationship and their energy and adapted the session to fit them. It was a little rainy so we made use of the screened-in porch and got a chance to wander through the woods with umbrellas once it cleared up a little. It’s one of my favorite sessions yet.
